Rosewood Automotive Locksmith FAQ

Lock problems tend to create very specific questions. Can the old lock stay? Can a car key be made when there is no spare? Is the problem actually the key, or is the door sitting badly in the frame?

Below are answers to the questions we hear most often around Mississauga. Some are urgent, some are planning questions, and a few are the sort of thing people only start wondering about after a key has already stopped working.

How do I find a locksmith in Mississauga for the problem I have?

Start with the problem rather than the type of locksmith you think you need. Tell Rosewood Automotive Locksmith whether you are locked out, have lost a car key, want old house keys to stop working, or have a business door that has become difficult to lock.

A good description can be simple. "The key goes in but won't turn" is useful. So is "I have one working car key and want a spare". We can work from there.

What should I do if I am locked out of my house?

Check whether somebody you trust has a spare key and whether another safe entrance is available. If not, avoid forcing the key or putting tools into the lock.

If you are locked out of house and the key is still with you, keep it. Tell us whether it goes into the lock normally, whether it turns at all and whether the door had been giving you trouble before today.

Rosewood Automotive Locksmith can look at the lockout first and then discuss any repair separately if something is actually wrong with the hardware.

Can a locksmith open my door without replacing the lock?

Often the goal of a lockout call is simply to restore access. A lock does not automatically need to be replaced just because you were locked out.

What happens next depends on the condition of the lock, key and door. If the hardware is still working properly after access is restored, there may be no reason to change it. If something is damaged or badly worn, that is a different conversation.

Should I rekey or replace my locks after moving?

If the existing locks are in good condition, rekeying may be enough. Rekeying changes which key operates the lock, so the old keys no longer work while the existing hardware stays on the door.

Replacement makes more sense when the hardware is damaged, loose, badly worn or no longer suitable for the door.

Rosewood Automotive Locksmith can also look at each door separately. The front lock may be worth keeping while a side entrance needs replacement. A new home does not require every lock to receive the same answer.

How can I secure my home after moving?

Start with the doors you already have. Try each exterior lock with the door open and closed. Look for loose hardware and pay attention to doors that need a push, pull or special key angle.

Then think about the old keys. You know how many were handed to you, but you may not know how many copies were made before you moved in. Rekeying suitable locks can give you a fresh set of working keys without replacing everything.

It is usually more useful to fix the real weak points than to buy new hardware simply because it is new.

Why does my deadbolt work when the door is open but not when it is closed?

That can point to the way the door and bolt line up rather than a bad lock by itself.

Doors shift. Hinges loosen. A bolt can begin rubbing against the strike instead of entering it cleanly. If you have been pulling the door toward you or lifting the handle to make the deadbolt work, tell the locksmith.

Rosewood Automotive Locksmith would want to look at the whole opening before assuming the lock should be replaced.

Can a locksmith make a car key if I have no spare?

Depending on the vehicle and key system, an automotive locksmith may be able to help when every working key has been lost.

Have the year, make and model ready and explain where the vehicle is parked. An all-keys-lost job is different from copying an existing spare, so that information matters from the beginning.

If the car is in an underground garage around Square One or another condo building, mention the parking level and any gate or visitor-access details as well.

What information is needed for car key replacement in Mississauga?

Start with the vehicle year, make and model. Tell Rosewood Automotive Locksmith whether you still have a working key and whether the car can currently be opened and started.

It also helps to say what you need: another spare key, replacement for a damaged key, a new fob or help after every key was lost.

When asking for a quote, check what is included. Car key replacement can involve the key itself, cutting, programming and the mobile visit.

Can a locksmith program a replacement key fob?

Many vehicle keys and remotes need more than a physical key cut. The replacement may also need to work with the vehicle's electronic security system.

The exact process depends on the car and the type of fob. Give us the vehicle details first rather than choosing a replacement based only on the shape or number of buttons.

Can you program a key fob I bought online?

Possibly, but the fob needs to be compatible with the vehicle.

Two remotes can look almost identical and still be different internally. If you already bought one, keep the packaging and any model or part information printed on it. Rosewood Automotive Locksmith can look at what you have before you buy another one.

We would rather check the first fob than tell you to throw it away without seeing it.

Should I use a locksmith or dealership for a replacement car key?

It depends on the vehicle and the key system.

Some replacement car-key work can be handled by a mobile automotive locksmith at the vehicle. Other situations may have different requirements. Rather than assuming every car belongs at the dealership or every car can be handled the same way, start with the exact year, make and model.

The useful comparison is also the full job, not just the advertised key price. Ask what the quote includes.

What should I do if my car key is locked inside the vehicle?

If the keys are visible inside, tell us. That makes it a different call from losing every car key.

Avoid forcing improvised tools around the door. Modern vehicle doors have trim, weather seals and other components that can be damaged while trying to solve a basic lockout.

If a child, vulnerable person or animal is trapped inside and there is immediate danger, contact emergency services first.

Can Rosewood Automotive Locksmith help if I am locked out of an apartment?

Yes, but tell us whether you are outside your private unit or a shared building entrance.

A common lobby or controlled entrance may be handled by building management or a concierge. Your apartment door is a different situation.

If your identification is locked inside with the keys, say that when you call. That is a normal problem during an apartment lockout, especially in condo buildings.

Can a business rekey its locks when an employee leaves?

If the existing commercial locks are suitable and still in good condition, rekeying may be an option. The old key stops working and new keys are issued without automatically replacing the entire lock.

Before making copies, decide which staff members actually need access. Keeping a simple record of who has each key can save a lot of uncertainty later.

For managed commercial properties, Rosewood Automotive Locksmith also recommends checking whether the landlord or property manager controls any of the doors involved.

Why is my business door getting harder to lock?

High-use doors can develop problems gradually. The lock may be worn, but the door itself can also shift enough that the bolt no longer lines up cleanly.

Try the lock with the door open. If it works smoothly there but becomes difficult after the door closes, mention that. It gives the locksmith a reason to inspect the door and frame instead of replacing hardware immediately.

Do I need to bring my lock or car key to you?

Rosewood Automotive Locksmith provides mobile locksmith service, so many jobs are handled where the house, business or vehicle is located.

That is especially useful for a door problem because the way the lock sits in the actual door can matter. It also makes sense for a vehicle that cannot be driven because the only key is missing.

A photo may help with an enquiry, but there is usually no benefit in removing a house lock before the visit.

What areas around Mississauga do you serve?

Rosewood Automotive Locksmith serves Mississauga neighbourhoods including Lakeview, Port Credit, Cooksville, Mineola, Applewood, Clarkson, Lorne Park, Erin Mills, Streetsville and Meadowvale, along with nearby areas such as parts of Etobicoke, Brampton and Oakville.

For addresses near the edge of the normal service area, give us the exact location and ask. That is more reliable than deciding by city name alone.

What should I tell a locksmith when I call?

You do not need a technical explanation.

Give the address, tell us whether the problem involves a home, business or vehicle, and explain what stopped working. For a vehicle, add the year, make and model. For a condo, include the unit, parking level or entrance if it matters.

"My key broke in the front lock."

"I lost my only car key."

"We moved in and want the old keys changed."

Any of those gives Rosewood Automotive Locksmith a useful place to begin.

Still Not Sure Which Locksmith Service You Need?

That is completely fine. Most people calling a locksmith are describing a problem, not ordering a technical part.

Tell Rosewood Automotive Locksmith what happened, what still works and where you are in or around Mississauga. Keep any keys, fobs or broken pieces you still have, and mention anything unusual about getting to the property or vehicle.

The answer may be a new key, rekeying, a lock repair, replacement hardware or simply getting you back inside. It is much easier to decide that after looking at the actual problem than to guess before the call.
